I was introduced to micro-needling by its original inventor, my friend and colleague in South Africa, Dr. Des Fernandes. I then brought the procedure to the United States in 1992 through my skincare company, Environ USA. This has given me a front row seat to the astounding results that can be achieved with this procedure. Over the years, I have tried every micro-needling technique out there. I know the pros and cons of each which is why I have now developed my own trademarked micro-needling technique called Micro-Renewal™. Unique to the Boston Center for Plastic Surgery, Micro-Renewal™ is able to dramatically improve both fine lines and deep wrinkles as well as your skin tone and texture without the need for multiple sessions.

What is Micro-Renewal™?

Micro-Renewal™ is the culmination of a quarter century of micro-needling experience. It is really a combination procedure that may include up to 3 different forms of micro-needling in one session along with:

  • Micro-fat grafting

It all depends on your specific needs. The advantage of Micro-Renewal™ is its ability to significantly improve both your skin tone and texture without surgery. A Micro-Renewal™ micro-needling procedure will:

  • Reduce lines around the mouth
  • Improve the appearance of crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles
  • Improve both skin tone & texture
  • Soften scars so that they are less visible
  • Smooth and improve “crepey” skin texture
  • Lift mild to moderate skin laxity
  • Improve fine lines & deep wrinkles

Best of all, these improvements can be achieved beyond just your face. Micro-Renewal™ is also effective for treating skin tone and texture issues on the neck, abdomen and arms.

Micro-Renewal™ Different than other Micro-Needling

Most micro-needling procedures in this country are performed by aestheticians who are only allowed to do superficial (0.5mm) treatments. This means that it takes multiple sessions, spread out over a few months, to achieve any significant improvement. On the plus side, a session with the SkinPen®, for example, requires no downtime. A medical micro-needling procedure like Micro-Renewal™, however, is an entirely different procedure because I can use much longer needles (up to 3mm). This creates an immediate and marked improvement in both skin tone and texture, but the downtime can be anywhere from 3-6 days.

Tolerance for Downtime

The latter is important. As discussed, what I do with micro-needling is much more intense than what you’ll get at a spa. Your face is going to be raw and you are not going to want to be seen for about a week. However, this kind of procedure doesn’t need to be repeated every month. A session with the SkinPen® may not require any downtime, but your results will be gradual and you will need multiple sessions, spaced about a month apart.

Figuring out the right micro-needling procedure for you really comes down to your individual needs and ability to tolerate downtime. The nice thing about micro-needling here at the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation is that we offer the full range of options. Some patients like being able to have a procedure and return to work immediately afterwards with no one being any the wiser. They find the need to commit to multiple sessions to be an appropriate trade-off for the ease. Others, however, are willing to stay inside for a few days in order to get a more “wow” result. Bottom line, it’s all about choice.

Why Micro-Needling Works

Most non-surgical procedures work by stimulating your body to heal itself. With time, the skin and tissues on the face and body begin to break down as your body stops producing as much collagen and elastin. The first is a plumping and lifting agent while the second is what keeps your skin flexible, allowing it to “bounce back” after you laugh, scowl or cry. With micro-needling, we are creating a series of small skin injuries. The reason that a medical micro-needling procedure such as Micro-Renewal™ can deliver a more dramatic result is because the longer needles penetrate further into your dermis. This creates micro-injuries not just on the surface of the skin, but in the deeper tissues as well. The body’s natural response to any kind of injury is to produce more collagen and elastin. The end result is more lifted, glowing and youthful looking skin.

Benefits of Micro-Needling

No matter what type of micro-needling procedure you choose, the benefits are wide ranging. Unlike some other non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedures that use heat, micro-needling:

  • Will not induce hyperpigmentation
  • Good for patients of all skin types, including darker skin
  • Does not cause scarring

Micro-Needling is also flexible, allowing me to treat almost any area on the face, neck and body. Most importantly, it is:

  • Safe
  • Extremely effective
  • Non-surgical so no incisions

Skill & Experience Matters

Micro-Needling is a procedure where skill and experience make a huge difference. While there seems to be a new spot cropping up daily in Boston that offers micro-needling for eliminating lip lines, at the Boston Center for Plastic Surgery, we’ve been doing this longer than anyone in the country. I have personally trained my team so whether you see a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon such as myself or my colleague, Dr. Sean Doherty or any of our nurses or aestheticians, you can rest assured that you are in excellent hands.
