Men want to look and feel like the best version of themselves. Men are one of the fastest growing segments of my practice. While a man often comes in to see me for the first time because his wife or girlfriend suggests it, he keeps coming back for the results. Just like women, men want to look and feel like the best version of themselves. However, there are definite differences when it comes to treating guys. For starters, they don’t want anyone to notice that they’ve had something done. This challenge of finding that balance between rejuvenated and natural is one of the reasons why I love working with men. They also trend towards non-surgical procedures with little to no downtime which is right in my wheelhouse. So, here’s a guide to the most popular aesthetic trends for men.
Crow’s Feet – Brad Pitt or Ryan Gosling? One of the changing aesthetic trends that I’ve noticed lately with guys centers around the crow’s feet. These are the “feet like” lines that develop at the outer corners of the eyes with age. Personally, I like men with a few lines around their eyes. It’s a historically masculine look — just think “Marlboro Man”, that many, including myself, find attractive. Since the motto of most guys when it comes to plastic surgery is “no muss, no fuss”, I didn’t use to do many crow’s feet procedures. Lately, however, that has changed. In fact, treating the crow’s feet with Botox® is often the gateway procedure for my male patients.
In order to get a real idea of a patient’s desired outcome, I will have him look at photos of celebrities like George Clooney and Brad Pitt versus Ryan Gosling. If he likes the first two, we leave the crow’s feet alone or do something super subtle. However, if Ryan is his guy, I carefully and strategically place Botox® to relax the dynamic muscles around the eyes that are causing these lines. The end result is a more awake, vital and energetic look to the face.

A Quick Fix for Sun Damage As I’ve discussed in other blogs, sun damage is one of the biggest agers out there. This is as true for men as it is for women. However, since men are not as receptive to a good skincare regime, including sunscreen, as women, sun damage can be a big problem for them. Thankfully, there is a very quick and easy fix: Clear + Brilliant Perméa®. This is a laser that radically improves many of the most common side effects of sun damage including:
Brown spots Melasma Uneven “crepey” skin texture Fine lines & wrinkles Enlarged pores More importantly, for guys, it achieves all of these things in 30 minutes or less with no downtime and no pain. Since men have zero tolerance for recovery, this can be a perfect option for facial rejuvenation. Most guys are shocked at how much younger they look and feel without all of those brown splotches.

Unfortunately, with age, the chin/neck juncture can become weak and flabby. This is particularly noticeable in men as many guys still wear collared shirts and/or a necktie. There are a number of procedures for achieving a more defined looking jawline. One that I use quite commonly is the filler Radiesse® . This is a calcium hydroxylapatite biostimulatory filler that works by stimulating collagen and elastin formation around the product, providing long-lasting, natural looking volume. This, in turn, restores some of the underlying structure that has been lost with age. For guys who have a little bit of excess fat under the chin, I will eliminate this submental fat with the injectable Kybella®. It will cause the patient to be red and swollen for about a week, but this is significantly less downtime than what’s associated with a surgical procedure such as liposuction .

Men today desire a lean, toned body aesthetic. In order to achieve this, many guys keep their weight low and work out hard. While this may give them those six pack abs and Thor like arms, it can also exacerbate age related volume loss in the mid-face. In general, men experience slower facial aging than women thanks to their thicker skin. However, replacing a small amount of lost volume in the mid-face is one of those procedures for guys that can really improve their overall aesthetic. Furthermore, it doesn’t require downtime, and the fillers used in this area deliver long lasting results. And when they see a skilled injector, such as myself, guys don’t have to worry about anyone being the wiser.
