If you are not happy with your reflection in the mirror, loss of volume could be a contributing factor. While facial aging is never about just one thing, fine lines and wrinkles, hollowness beneath the eyes, sunken cheeks, and a loss of definition at the jawline may all be the result of volume loss. The funny thing about volume or “fat” is that with age, many of us tend to gain it in the abdomen, for example, where we don’t want it, but lose it in the mid-face, where we do. Restoring lost volume with either dermal fillers or fat grafting can be a fantastic way to rejuvenate your body and soul. But how do you know which procedure is right? Here are some of the pros and cons of each.
Dermal Fillers for Facial Rejuvenation in Boston
If you are beginning to feel like there is a disconnect between how you feel on the inside and how you look on the outside, schedule an in-person consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon such as myself to discuss your best options. I find that with the ubiquity of injectables, some patients don’t realize the importance of an injector’s skill. This is a medical procedure, so be smart and see a doctor who specializes in facial rejuvenation.
In terms of dermal fillers, there are numerous benefits such as:
- Safe
- Wide range of options depending on needs
- Versatile
- No real downtime
- Effective
- Predictable results
And if you choose a hyaluronic acid (HA)-based filler, which is most of the market, and you hate your results, they are reversible. The downside of fillers is that in order to maintain your results, you will need ongoing treatments.
Pros and Cons of Facial Fat Grafting
With a facial fat grafting procedure, I remove a tiny bit of fat from an area where you have too much and place it into your wrinkle, cheek, or temples, for example, to restore a more youthful-looking countenance. Probably the biggest benefit of facial fat grafting for interested patients is that you are using your own tissue, so there is no chance of an adverse reaction. While not 100% of the fat survives, ultimately, the results are permanent. For patients seeking extra volume, an additional procedure is sometimes recommended.
