Some women have skin and breast tissue that is too weak to sustain the size implant that they want and/or create the best shape breasts for their anatomy. In the past, this meant possibly settling for a less ideal outcome. That is no longer the case thanks to the advent of a surgical mesh such as GalaFLEX® in breast surgery. Made from an advanced, biologically derived polymer, the mesh acts as an immediate “internal bra” of support. Over time, however, the mesh itself dissolves, leaving behind “scar” tissue made of your own collagen that is 2-4 times stronger than your native breast tissue. This has been a game changer, enabling those with damaged tissue to get the size and shape of breasts that they want. So, how do you know if a surgical mesh is going to be right for you? It always begins with an in-person consultation.

Breast Surgery Consultation in Boston

Although we are living in a time where much of our lives can be conducted successfully online, some things are still better done in person. Scheduling a consultation with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, such as myself, who specializes in breast surgery, is one of the best ways to ensure that you get the long-lasting, exemplary outcome that you deserve. During our meeting, I will listen closely to what bothers you about your body contour. We will discuss your medical history, family history, any prior procedures you may have had, surgical or non-surgical, and how your body healed. Then, I will conduct a thorough physical exam to assess:

  • Breast volume
  • Degree of sagging in breast tissue
  • Nipple position
  • Skin tone & texture

Together, we will discuss the best breast procedure for achieving your goals and whether the addition of a surgical mesh is warranted. Generally, I will recommend GalaFLEX® as a compliment to breast lift and revision breast surgery for some patients.

Ideal Candidate for GalaFLEX® in Boston

The ideal candidate for the addition of a surgical mesh in breast surgery is any woman in good overall health, who is within 10 lbs. of a maintainable goal weight,
but who has compromised breast tissue. This is tissue that is thin, weak and sags due to any number of things including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breast Feeding
  • Weight Gain/Loss
  • Genetics
  • Menopause
  • Previous Surgery

Lifestyle choices such as:

  • Smoking
  • Diet & Exercise Routine
  • Sun Exposure
  • Living In or Near a Big City with a lot of Pollution

These can also adversely affect the health of your breast tissue. Restoring strength to this tissue with the addition of a surgical mesh allows me to place a breast implant and/or lift your breasts back to a more youthful, perky position on your chest wall and know that your tissues can hold your new breast shape over time.

Cost of Surgical Mesh

Adding a surgical mesh to your breast surgery is going to be an additional cost. The exact amount will depend on your procedure and the type of mesh that we use, but generally, it’s about $2,500. However, a surgical mesh, if needed, will extend the lifespan of your breast surgery so when you amortize this cost over time, it is truly negligible.
