Looking down at a device such as a cellphone or tablet isn’t always kind to your neck. Not only is the angle awkward, making even the slightest wrinkle look more prominent, but all of that bending can place undue tension on the delicate tissues of your neck. Couple this with the fact that “Zoom” has become a regular component of most people’s workday, and it makes sense that more and more of my Boston area patients are wanting to know: “Do I need a neck lift?”. Figuring out whether or not any procedure is right for your anatomy, goals and lifestyle is best done by an experienced plastic surgeon such as myself.
Neck Lift Consultation in Boston
Scheduling an in-person consultation with a plastic surgeon in your area is one of the best things that you can do to guarantee an excellent result. No outcome is going to be great if you don’t get the exact right procedure for your anatomy and needs. This is why every treatment plan that I devise is individualized. During our meeting, I will listen to what it is that you don’t like about your appearance. We will discuss your medical history, family history and any prior procedures as well as how your body healed, if applicable.
Next, I will perform a thorough physical exam to assess:
- Neck skin tone & texture
- Extent and location of sagging skin
- Presence of excess fat
- Degree of muscle laxity, if any
Together, we will come up with the ideal treatment plan for improving the appearance of your neck and jawline. Depending on your individual anatomy, this may entail a traditional neck lift or a deep plane neck lift. I have extensive experience in both techniques.
Are You a Candidate for a Neck Lift?
In general, the delineation between a non-surgical procedure for rejuvenating the neck and a surgical neck lift is going to come down to the severity of sagging in the skin around your neck and/or jawline. However, some patients who only have a mild to moderate amount of loose tissue may decide on a surgical approach as it’s a one and done type of procedure as opposed to something non-surgical which typically requires regular upkeep. I will go over all of the pros and cons in detail during our consultation so that you can make an informed decision. The only restrictions that I have in terms of patient selection are that you be in:
- Good overall health
- Within 10 lbs. of a maintainable goal weight
- Non-smoker
A neck lift can be a great option for both women and men. Although men are generally less inclined to take a surgical approach, a clean, crisp jawline is a masculine ideal, and a neck lift may be the perfect way to address a double chin.
Neck Lift Incisions & Recovery
The incisions for a neck lift are typically placed around the ear and sometimes under the chin. I practice the kind of precise surgical techniques that place as little tension as possible on the skin which greatly reduces the risk of a raised scar. Taking proper care after surgery is critical, however, for achieving the exemplary result that we both want. I will send you home with detailed post-op instructions. You may need to wear a compression garment, and you can expect some initial bruising and swelling. This is your body’s way of healing and typically resolves on its own in about 2 weeks. I want you to avoid strenuous exercise until I give you the “all clear”. You will need to take it easy, eat well and generally, be kind to yourself in order to let your body heal.
