The appropriate size and shape breast implant can improve your entire body composition by restoring or creating proper proportion. When the top half of your body balances out the bottom half, it may make your waist look smaller and your abdomen appear longer and leaner. This is the kind of desirable aesthetic that can not only make you look better, but may also have a profoundly positive effect on your level of self-confidence. My Boston area breast augmentation patients talk about how their breast implants make them feel more courageous, vibrant and youthful. A common question that I hear from many new breast surgery patients, however, is: “Are breast implants after kids a good idea?”. Yes, but there are some things that you need to consider.

Pregnancy Can Adversely Affect the Shape of Your Breasts

Children are life-changing in ways both expected and not. Despite the fact that your favorite celebrity may be posting bikini photos on the internet 2 weeks after giving birth, many mother’s bodies do not bounce back after having a child. And this makes sense. The skin and tissues throughout your torso have had to stretch to accommodate this other person. Depending on:

  • How much weight you gained
  • Number of pregnancies
  • Skin tone & texture
  • Age

Your breasts may never look the same. A breast augmentation can be a safe, straightforward surgical procedure for restoring harmony throughout your entire body.

Breast Augmentation with Implants in Boston

One of the downsides to the fact that a breast augmentation remains the most popular aesthetic surgical procedure in the world is that some patients forget that it is still surgery. It’s important to choose the right plastic surgeon. Personally, I always recommend that patients see a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, such as myself, with considerable experience in breast surgery as this is one of the best ways to ensure that you get the safe, excellent result that you desire. During our initial consultation, I will ask what bothers you about your appearance. We’ll review your medical history, family history, any other procedures you may have had as well as how your body healed. Then, I will perform a thorough physical exam to assess:

  • Native breast volume
  • Skin tone & texture
  • Degree of sagging, if any
  • Nipple position

Together, we will go over photos and discuss the best treatment plan for your unique anatomy, desired outcome and lifestyle.

More Children May Change Your Breasts Again

One of the first lifestyle questions to answer is: Are you done having children? While it is safe to get pregnant with breast implants, if you gain a significant amount of weight, it may change the size and shape of your breasts again. In fact, it is not uncommon for a patient to need a breast lift, perhaps in addition to an implant, after multiple children as the skin and tissues may have a significant degree of sagging. When you look in the mirror, do your nipples point towards the floor? This is often a good barometer of whether or not a mastopexy may be right for you. A breast lift is the best way to lift your breasts back up to their proper place on your chest wall. As mentioned, it can be a stand-alone procedure or combined with a breast implant and/or fat grafting for more volume.

Post-Op Help is Imperative

Another lifestyle factor to consider is the age of your children. Breast augmentation recovery is about 2 weeks of not picking up anything heavier than 10 lbs.. So, if your children are still young, you are not going to be able to carry them making it critical that you have a plan in place to provide the post op help you’ll need so that you can focus on healing. This may include:

  • Child care
  • Housekeeper
  • Grocery and/or food delivery
  • Pet sitter

I don’t want you stretching out your incisions by reaching across a table to wipe it down, exercising too strenuously or trying to walk an eager pup who pulls on the leash. This is a time to take it easy. You’ve invested a lot of time and money into your new body contour so it would be a shame to push things too far, too fast and potentially mar your fabulous results.
