Fine lines and wrinkles may be the first noticeable sign of more candles on your birthday cake, but it is important to keep in mind that aging in the skin and tissues is multi-factorial. This is why at Boston Center for Plastic Surgery (BCFPS), we always take a comprehensive approach with every patient. We want you to understand why you may be feeling dissatisfied with your appearance as well as the available options for rejuvenation so that you can make the right choice for your lifestyle and needs. As a Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, I have long been an advocate of cutting-edge procedures, but only if they work. Fat transfer is one of my go-to options for turning back the clock because it is an effective procedure with minimal downtime and long-term benefits. Here are five advantages of fat transfer.

Fat Transfer in Boston Delivers Serious Rejuvenation

As mentioned, fine lines and wrinkles are typically one of the earliest signs of aging. They naturally occur as your tissues lose their levels of collagen and elastin, starting around age 25. Collagen is what provides support while elastin is what gives your skin its ability to “bounce back” into place after you laugh or frown, for example. Lifestyle choices such as:

  • Sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Diet
  • Living in or near a big city
  • Hydration
  • Skincare Regime

These can all speed up your aging process, manifesting as:

  • Fine lines & wrinkles
  • Sagging tissues
  • Jowling
  • Volume loss in the mid-face and/or hands
  • Hollowness under the eyes

Fat transfer can be an excellent procedure for addressing all of these issues without some of the downsides that may be associated with dermal fillers. When administered by someone such as myself with many years of experience and deep knowledge of the procedure, fat transfer can deliver serious rejuvenation with minimal downtime.

No Allergic Reaction with Fat Transfer

Lately, dermal fillers have been receiving some negative press. This does not mean that they are bad for you, but many of my Boston area patients are interested in a more natural option for restoring lost volume. One of the best things about fat grafting is that since this “filler” comes from your own body, there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction. Furthermore, fat transfer is a buildable procedure in which we can start conservatively, see how you like your results, and then decide whether or not you would like a little more. My goal is to deliver the kind of outcome where people know you look great but can’t pinpoint exactly why.

Immediate, Long-Lasting Results with Fat Transfer

Another thing that my patients love about fat transfer is that the results are immediate. There is no waiting around for 2 weeks to see how things look. You can expect some initial swelling in the treatment area, but this resolves quickly. And the icing on the cake is that this rejuvenation will continue to ramp up over time as the stem cells, growth factors, and proteins in your harvested fat work their magic on the quality of your skin. The benefit of this cannot be emphasized enough. Glowing skin makes you look and feel more energized, healthy, and confident.

Zero Incisions

One of the main reasons why I am such a fan of fat transfer is that I can achieve dramatic rejuvenation without the need for stitches or anesthesia. It’s the reason that the downtime is minimal. Most patients are back to their daily routine in 1-2 days. This is a huge boon for patients as time is a precious commodity for most of us. Also, some patients have health issues that may prevent surgery, and/or they simply do not like the idea of going under the knife. With fat transfer, you don’t have to.

Fat Transfer is Versatile

Lastly, fat transfer is an incredibly versatile procedure. Treatment areas at BCFPS include:

  • Face
  • Lips
  • Hands
  • Breasts
  • Buttocks

Depending on your treatment area, fat will typically be removed via mini-liposuction from the:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks

The harvested fat will then be processed to separate out the fat cells, which are then purified and re-injected into your target area. The whole procedure can take an hour or less and is usually performed under local anesthesia.
