A crisp jawline is truly one of the hallmarks of the masculine face

The jawline is one of the more defining features of the face for both men and women. It provides balance to your eyes, anchors the lower third of your face, and acts as a transition to the neck and rest of your body. While women like a jawline that is soft yet defined, men generally prefer one with a strong angle. Regardless of ethnicity, a crisp jawline is truly one of the hallmarks of the masculine face. Some men are not genetically blessed with the jawline that they’d like. While for others, the issue is due to age. With time, the skin and tissues on your face and body loose tone, and begin to droop. When this will occur depends on a number of factors such as genetics and lifestyle choices, but facial aging happens to everyone. Luckily, I have a lot of effective options at the Boston Center for Plastic Surgery for improving the look of your jawline. Here are 3 non-surgical procedures for a more masculine, defined jawline.

Filler for Definition

Filler is one of the most versatile procedures in my arsenal. While we offer our patients the full range of options here at Boston Center for Plastic Surgery, I typically use Radiesse® on men for their jawline. Unlike a hyaluronic acid (HA) based filler, Radiesse® is made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA). This is a stiffer gel, making it ideal for restoring structure to the skin and tissues of your jaw. Radiesse® is also a biostimulatory filler so it actually promotes your own body to produce more collagen and elastin in the treatment area. This means that not only will you see an initial improvement, but the look of your jawline will continue to improve over time. In general, you can expect the results from a Radiesse® treatment to last anywhere from 12-14 months.

The other great thing about Radiesse® is that depending on where I place the filler, it can create a:

  • More defined profile
  • Strong chin
  • Crisp angle between the jaw and the top of the neck

Treating Men Requires Different Approach

There are some key differences when it comes to treating men versus women. Men literally have thicker skin, and since they desire a sharper angle to their chin/neck juncture, I can be more aggressive when treating the jawline. The other thing with men, in general, is that they have a low tolerance for downtime. They want a procedure that is going to deliver measurable results without a great deal of recovery. This is why non-surgical procedures are such a nice option. You want to look more youthful and vital at work as it helps to keep you looking and feeling more competitive. But you also don’t want anyone to know that you’ve had anything “done”. All of these procedures, when performed by a Board-Certified dermatologist such as myself or a Board-Certified plastic surgeon with the training, skill and experience to deliver exemplary results, can restore a natural looking, lifted look to your face with minimal downtime.

Kybella® to Remove Fat Under the Chin

While loose skin is one of the main culprits to a weak jawline, the other is excess fat under the chin. Extremely common in both men and women, unwanted fat in this area is often hereditary. I can not tell you how often I see a patient who is fit and trim, yet still has this pocket of fat under the chin. It’s incredibly frustrating. Kybella® is an injectable that was specifically designed to address submental fat. Comprised of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat, Kybella® destroys the fat cells in the treatment area. You will require a series of treatments, spaced about 4 weeks apart, in order to achieve your end result. However, once these fat cells are gone, they are gone for good assuming that your weight stays stable. You can expect swelling after each treatment. I refer to it as the “bullfrog” look. While it will be apparent to you, most people, other than really close friends or family, are not going to notice it.

Profound® RF to Lift and Tone

While filler is a great option for patients with mild to moderate jowling in the lower face, Profound® RF can be a game changer for those patients with more severe sagging. This is a procedure that combines microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy to lift and tone your skin and tissues. Microneedling comes in a number of different forms from mild to more intense. Profound® RF is a more intense procedure. The needles puncture the skin, allowing the RF energy to be delivered deeply. The “injury” of the needles combined with the energy of the RF promote collagen production. As this is what plumps the skin and tissues, the end result is a lower face with more lift and tone.

While Profound® is a procedure that lives up to its name, it does require more downtime than either filler or Kybella®. You can expect some:

  • Redness
  • Bruising
  • Swelling

This will last anywhere from 3-5 days. However, you will only need one treatment. And really, with most of us still in masks, no one needs to know about your procedure unless you choose to tell them.
