Microneedling is a favorite procedure of mine. As one of the plastic surgeons that helped introduce it in the United States, I have a long and successful history with this technique. I have seen first hand how it can radically transform both the skin tone and texture of my Boston area patients. As with all aesthetic procedures, it is imperative that you get the right one for your unique anatomy and needs. At Boston Center for Plastic Surgery (BCFPS), we offer a wide range of microneedling options. Some are on the more mild side and can be performed by one of our highly trained aestheticians. Others, like Profound®, are more intense and must be performed by a plastic surgeon such as myself. One of the reasons that I continue to be such a strong advocate for microneedling is due to its efficacy and versatility. Here are 3 key benefits of a microneedling procedure for facial rejuvenation.
Microneedling Delivers Serious Rejuvenation in Boston
As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I only recommend a procedure if it will
actually work. One of the things that I like best about microneedling is that it can
deliver serous rejuvenation. Facial aging may be inevitable, but there are things
that you can choose to do in order to turn-back-the-clock. A facelift is the gold
standard, but not everyone wants or needs a surgical procedure. I am known for my
ability to layer non-surgical procedures in order to deliver facelift and neck lift like
results. A microneedling procedure is typically part of this treatment plan as it
induces your own skin and tissues to produce more collagen and elastin. These are
the two foundations of youthful looking skin, but levels of both sadly begin to
decline at age 25. This may result in:
- Fine lines
- Deeper creases
- Crepey, uneven skin texture
- Mild sagging, particularly around the jowls
- Large pores
As mentioned, the key to a successful outcome is matching the right microneedling
procedure to your needs. Options at BCFPS include:
- SkinPen®
- Derma Roller®
- MatixRF®
- Profound®
The latter two combine microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy while the
first two involve microneedles in various lengths. An advantage of visiting a
practice such as BCFPS is that a plastic surgeon can use longer microneedles that
penetrate deeper into your dermis. I typically perform a more intense Derma
Roller® treatment with long needles that delivers a better result, often in a single
session. In addition to its rejuvenating benefits, microneedling may also be an ideal
procedure for improving mild to moderate acne scars, surgical scars and stretch
marks.
Microneedling is Safe for All Skin Types
Another huge benefit of microneedling is that it is safe to use on all skin types and
ethnicities. Other non-surgical modalities for improving skin texture, such as
lasers, may be problematic for those with darker skin. A microneedling procedure,
on the other hand, “injures” your skin, which is what promotes your body to
produce more healing collagen and elastin, in a more gentle manner. Even a more
intense treatment, such as Profound® which combines microneedling with
radiofrequency (RF) energy, is perfectly safe for my darker skinned patients.
Long Lasting Results with Microneedling
As mentioned, I have been performing various microneedling procedures longer
than almost anyone else in the US and can say, with certainty, that the results we
achieve are long-lasting. This is due to the fact that your initial outcome will
continue to improve over time as your own body increases its production of
collagen and elastin. Obviously, a more intense microneedling session is going to
deliver a more dramatic result. However, it will also entail more time for recovery.
I work closely with my patients to develop a treatment plan that finds the right
balance for you between results and recovery.
